Healing from the Inside Out
Cathy Wilder, RCC, Ph.d., Dip C (haven.ca)
I am a clinical counsellor who has provided mental health support and wellness-enhancing opportunities to diverse individuals, couples, and families for over thirty years. I believe change and healing are 'inside-out' processes, requiring self-compassion, determination, and commitment. In my experience, the most enduring transformations occur in relationship with another. This is one of the needs for and benefits of counselling. Being attuned to you and supporting your self-pacing are essential elements I bring to the process. I offer a safe, confidential, and boundaried space for this process to unfold.
For twenty years, I specialized in addiction counselling in addition to my private practice. Addiction counselling most often includes severe trauma and mental health challenges for those I served. Those individuals and families taught me how to sustain faith and hope when they faltered, and the importance of compassionate inquiry and caring.
Over the years, I have listened to and followed my interests, passions, and innate body-wisdom. This has guided me through my formal and alternative education and training. This path led me from a Master's in Education and Business, where I focused on facilitation of training and development programs as well as strategic planning, to the more psychological realm of counselling and personal transformation I practice today.
I continue to augment my skills and knowledge about counselling and the ever-emerging field of trauma recovery and human potential. I am currently enrolled in a plant-medicine training, enhancing my capacity in preparation and intention setting, as well as integratation practices.
My non-traditional Ph.D focused on relational, somatic, and embodied practices.
I want to acknowledge the many teachers, both formal and informal, who have shaped who I am, how I show-up, and how I continue to evolve myself in my practice. I am deeply grateful for the sharing of their lived experience and traditional knowledge. I live with appreciation for their guidance and invaluable wisdom that illuminates the way forward in these difficult times.
I am deeply grateful to be living, working and playing on the traditional and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples: the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
How I Work
Client Centered ~ Trauma Informed ~ Beyond Talk Therapy
I have been in private practice since 1995, weaving together many traditional and complementary modalities to support resilience and well-being. I am committed to consent-based, trauma-informed, relational care. My work is profoundly influenced by my reverence and gratitude for the Earth, and the infinite spiritual interconnectedness recognized and practiced through the wisdom of ancient traditions, both Eastern and Western.
As you lead the way, I follow with an intention of integration into greater awareness and wholeness. I provide a grounded, expansive space for the focus to shift from 'body, mind, emotions, and spirit' as needed. In resonance and attunement with you, I work with a myriad of methods, tools, and techniques, both cognitive and body-focused. In my experience, given the ever-increasing demands and fast pace of our lives, I emphasize the slowing down, connection, and integration of bodily sensations to guide you. I use breathing techniques, mindfulness practices, and body-awareness building techniques.
Your pacing and dignity matter to me.
I believe key ingredients in your counselling experience are those of 'compassion, curiosity and connection', connection to self, to others, community, the environment, and the earth.
As we work together, you will come to identify more readily your strengths. You will learn how to make use of those strengths to support aspects of yourself that need development. In a space infused with compassion, integrity, heart, and inspiration, you will realize an expanded and healthier you.
I would be honored to walk alongside you in your journey to greater integrated wholeness and a deeper connection to your inner healer. Why Counselling?

Tools for Growth
Breath & Body Integration
Our bodies hold wisdom, information, and guidance. Our bodies also hold layers of accumulated tension and stories of our life experiences. Working at your own pace, with breath and other release techniques, I will support you in moving through those layers. You will naturally orient toward an outcome that will enhance a greater connection to your inner wisdom as well as infinite sources of energy.
Learning to navigate this territory can shift patterns of stuckness into states of increased well-being. These tools can also enable freedom not only from physical and mental health challenges, but also from painful relationship situations. Relief from states such as depression and chronic anxiety, frustration and anger outbursts, or even the dullness of apathy, all become available as you learn to recognize, acknowledge, and navigate your body's sensations and messages.
Mindfulness & Somatic Awareness
Cultivating a practice of mindfulness builds presence. Building presence activates greater health and enhances well-being. I make use of various mindfulness techniques and body-scanning processes in sessions and encourage more for homework.
Traditional pathways to success typically demand strong mental processing, which can result in a disconnection from our bodily messages. Eventually, our body "screams" and says "no more."
As we work together, you will learn to listen, recognize your body-mind messages, and develop calming and self-regulating strategies to mitigate chronic unhealthy patterns that have taken root.
Attachment & Inner Child Healing
Developing a secure attachment is a gift to oneself and a significant offering to others in your life. New pathways to healing unfold as you understand more about your attachment style, the development of it, its impact on your childhood, as well as how it now influences your emotional state and relationships.
Family Systems: Inner & Outer
Each of us is composed of various parts, aspects, and characteristics. Exploring these parts and discovering more about yourself facilitates your capacity to take charge of your life-force energy and vitality. Together, we can hold all of the various parts of you. We can see how they relate to one another, meet them with compassion, and learn to create coherence within the various internal family systems. Most often, what lies on the other side of this journey is growth, learning, vitality, and a greater sense of oneself.
Beliefs and Expectations
Your beliefs may inform the present, however, with increased consciousness, they do not need to predict the future. It is also possible to update and change your beliefs starting NOW. Counselling will support you to discover more about your beliefs and understand how they unconsciously drive your actions and choices. With increased awareness, significant shifts and changes are possible. The same holds true for expectations. Becoming aware of your expectations and how they impact your feelings, emotions, and reactions is eye-opening. This awareness can offer you freedom from disappointment and thus more fulfilling experiences and relationships. Counselling helps illuminate your expectations and supports you to make more conscious choices.
As illustrated in the Satir Model of the Iceberg, what we see in our behaviours is only 1/7th of all that is happening.
Groups
Self-discovery and exploration in a group process can offer expanded opportunities to meet oneself in another's reflection. It is often more intense and may culminate in a peak expereince. I currently facilitate group processes in "Come Alive", one of the core programs at The Haven on Gabriola Island. Please refer to the website for more detailed program information and registration.
Attending programs on Gabriola Island is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, unplug from technology, and 'plug into yourself'. In addition to all the learnings in group and conversations with others, nature beckons for forest bathing, earthing opportunities, and ocean plunges.

Testimonials
The journey, exploration, and discovery with you is an honour and privelege for me.
~ Cathy Wilder
“I am very happy to tell you that another sober year has passed, eight years now, and I want to thank you for helping to give me this new lease on life. I'm convinced that if we had not arrested my downward slide, my life would be far different now. The caring, support and teaching you provided helped lead me in the direction of the sober life which I have consistently maintained. I remember meeting you when I was in the depths of withdrawal, hopelessness and shame, and feeling your warm confidence that I could make this fundamental change.
My life is good and I am in a stable, loving relationship. I am so grateful. My life is full and vibrant. Thank you for your contribution.”
~ J.P.
“I want to say thank you for the help and encouragement you have provided me over the years. It has really helped me transform my life and how I feel about myself. It has allowed me to focus on what really matters to me. The set of practices I use now are
life-long tools to keep me in my healthy zone of well-being.”
~ Guy
“What makes Cathy an exceptional theraptist is that she feels what is going on. She quickly moves me out of my head, into my body and gets to the heart of the issue.”

The Way Home
One of the mysteries of life:
My experience in finding ‘my way’ to this logo design is nothing short of a miracle, a reflection and affirmation of the vastness of all that ‘I don’t know that I don’t know’.
As you choose to enter into a counselling relationship with me, this is the spirit into which you are invited
First, this logo comes from the book All Sickness is Homesickness by Dianne Connelly. The artist is John.
As I was looking for and in the process of creating a logo for myself, I happened upon this image. I spontaneously and inexplicably burst into tears. In that moment I knew this was my logo. I then began to read more into its meaning.
In contacting Dianne to seek permission for its use, she informed me that the artist, John, had just died and that they had spoken of his work "living on." I had permission.
What I see reflected in this image is the flow and strength of water, of a wave. I see at the centre a vastness—depth, silence, quiet— movement and stillness.
And so much more...
I invite you into the unfolding mystery that is you…
Come explore with me.
